The Incredible Hulk: Review

Marvel's biggest creation is back on the big screen, and he is a very different creature to the one that Ang Lee bought us a few years back in Hulk. Is this a sequel? Well...yes...and no. It's the same character but the history seems to have been remade in the credit sequence, giving us time to adjust to Edward Norton stepping into the shoes of Eric Bana before him.

We follow Dr Banner, trying desperately to find a cure to his over dosage of gamma radiation while trying to hide from William Hurt's General Ross, a man determined to get his 'creation' back for military purposes, and he brings in tough soldier Tim Roth, who gets his own taste of not feeling himself.

Add to the frame Liv Tyler as the love interest and you have all the ingredients of another Marvel blockbuster. The Hulk himself looks even more impressive and the set pieces, including the finale, are well handled. And yet there is still something that it is lacking. Humour.

Don't get me wrong there's a couple of nice nudge nudges to the fans (particularly of the 70s TV show) and one very good gag between Tyler and Norton, but it is all taken far too seriously.

The cast do a fine job. Norton is very sympathetic as the lone doctor, and Tyler is always a sight for sore eyes. The film is stolen by Roth who seems to be the only one doing this with his tongue rammed into his cheek. And look out for a guest appearance from another Marvel character who has had a movie out this year...(has that narrowed it down?)

A reasonable blockbuster with loads to recommend it, but if Hulk returns (which I'm sure he will), they should try and make things just a little lighter.
