Before I start, I need to say one thing. Ignore the critics, who dream of another Raiders Of The Lost Ark. That would never happen (let's face it, the three before were never that) but if you want escapism of the highest order, then you cannot go wrong.
Let's get the bad parts out of the way. The plot is ridiculous, then then when you think of Angels of Death, curses and 1,000 year old knights, this one does fall into the category of the rest of the series. There are far too many CGI, some of a lower calibre (some reminiscent of the dreadful effects in Die Another Day) and the final hour does drag its feet in place.
Now for the good news. Harrison Ford sparkles. His charm and charisma shines through and even if he does creak in places, he still manages to hold the film together with ease. Cate Blanchett is also a perfect baddie, full of sly looks and hammy acting, she really looks like she's having a great time and it's nice to see her in a very different role. The set pieces are also great fun. The opening one particularly exciting and you will never look at a fridge in the same way again. It would have been nice to have more of Karen Allen's Marion bantering with Indy, and Shia LaBeouf is far better than he was in last year's Transformers, but if Spielberg and Lucas are thinking of getting him to step into Ford's shoes, I can't see him cutting it.
With crime on the rise, the credit crush affecting everyone, the world collapsing on itself, it nice to find a safe haven where you can get lost in the nonsense and come out entertained, which is exactly what this did for me.
